Artist: Cindy Walton
Artist Statement: Oil and cold wax pigment sticks.
My work is an exploration of the intersection between the natural and human-made world, filtered through the lens of abstract compositions and human emotion. Drawing inspiration from the ever-changing landscapes and cityscapes of my home in the Blue Ridge Mountains, I translate the essence of terrain, shifting light, and vibrant color into evocative, multi-layered paintings. Whether sparked by the flowing waters of a mountain stream or an aerial view of an urban plan, my goal is to create abstract visions that feel universally familiar yet emotionally resonant.
Each piece becomes a dialogue between intuition, risk-taking, and technique. I apply layers of pigment, wax, charcoal and texture to establish depth and flatness, often combined within the same canvas. Through this exploratory process, I seek to evoke a sense of wonder and self-reflection - inviting viewers to contemplate their own connections to the natural world, the human environments we inhabit, and the fleeting moments of beauty that suffuse both.
Over time, my approach has evolved to embrace more spontaneity while retaining the foundations of my materials and processes. In my current work, I aim to capture the raw energy and beauty present in the landscapes around us, while also plumbing the depths of the human experience within each scene. By letting go and allowing my materials to intermingle in unexpected ways, I hope to create visceral visual expressions that speak to our shared desire for awe, grounding, and elemental connection.
